Common Spaces II

An innovative infill-development proposal combining unprogrammed green spaces, community-supported agriculture via hydroponics, and a publicly funded educational gallery — reimagining urban living through sustainable design.

Common Spaces II exterior view

A prevailing concern in urban environments is the scarcity of green spaces and the diminished presence of agricultural operations. This proposal presents an innovative infill-development tailored to address both challenges concurrently. Building upon the concepts that informed Common Spaces I, it offers unprogrammed green spaces, extensive interior programming for community-supported agriculture, and a publicly funded educational gallery.

The proposed structure comprises three distinct inclined planes, each featuring a unique green surface for pedestrians to unwind and partake in various activities. Triangular gaps between each inclined plane facilitate the penetration of natural light into the inner structure. Upon entering the ground floor, visitors are provided with a unique view of the subfloor garden extension from a walkway that extends around two sides of the interior.

The structure features hydroponic towers extending from the roofing structure to a concealed subfloor water tank, fostering year-round produce cultivation. A rainwater capture system diverts runoff from the existing roof to replenish the water supply and support the greenery above.
